COVID-19 Update from the JPF Japanese Studies Team
Message
Due to the effect of COVID-19, rapid shifts in our collective priorities are reshaping how we work and interact on a daily basis, if we are fortunate enough to be able to do so at all. At The Japan Foundation, Sydney, we have sadly had to cancel a number of upcoming events under the Japanese Studies umbrella, including a Kobun Workshop and a Japanese literature talk series, as well as initiatives such as the New Voices in Japanese Studies panel and a student mobility roundtable that were scheduled to take place at the (cancelled) #ASAA2020 conference.
In the wake of these cancellations, in our own small way we’re trying to work out how we can best reorient our time and resources to support Japan-related researchers in Australia during this challenging period.
For now, we’re planning to focus on the following:
- Adapting the criteria for our mini grant funding in keeping with current limitations and emerging needs
- Increasing online content by making archival recordings of past talks by scholars available on our website
- Continuing publication of New Voices in Japanese Studies, including a possible special issue with a global open call.
We invite your comments and suggestions regarding the above, particularly regarding any emerging needs that you believe we may be able to assist with.
Please also note that during this time, for security reasons while we work from home, we will be unable to send bulk emails to our academic database. This means that our #jstudies newsletter will be our main way of communicating with scholars until the current situation changes, so we encourage you to subscribe if you have not already.
