Wagashi: Nature and Tradition in Sweets

April 18, 2020

As a precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19, this event has been cancelled. All tickets purchased via Eventbrite will receive full refunds. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Join us at Campbelltown Arts Centre for a special talk and demonstration by wagashi specialist Sachiko Matsunami of Wagashi Moments on the making of wagashi (artisanal Japanese sweets).

Wagashi is an art that mirrors everyday life. It represents all things living and natural by transforming traditional sweet-making into a consumable art that references nature, the seasons, flowers and more. Developed to compliment Japanese tea ceremony, it reflects the ritualistic precision and deliberation that is at the heart of tea ceremony.

The talk and demonstration will be followed by a reception to sample Sachiko Matsunami’s wagashi, accompanied by organic Japanese tea provided by Harvest Index.

Note: The content of this event is the same as the April 17 wagashi talk and demonstration at The Japan Foundation, Sydney.

ABOUT SACHIKO MATSUNAMI

Sachiko was born in Fujisawa, Japan. Curious by nature, she has always pursued many different avenues and held various interests.

Through her work as a Japanese food photographer, she became enchanted by the rich world of wagashi that reflects the season and nature in only 3 sq. cm. As a result, she decided to study wagashi-making under prominent wagashi artists.

Sachiko skillfully crafts nerikiri (wagashi made with bean paste with mochi) and kingyokukan (jellied wagashi) using her hands, scissors, needles and other wooden tools into intricate creations.
