A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters

Discover Japan’s rich graphic design culture at The Japan Foundation, Sydney’s upcoming exhibition, A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters. Featuring a considered selection of 24 posters by six Japanese graphic designers, the exhibition explores how these uniquely creative minds have used two-dimensional printed media to convey sport and its sense of movement throughout the decades. The exhibition will be held at The Japan Foundation, Sydney gallery from October 15, 2021 to January 22, 2022.

Co-presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney and the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, A Sense of Movement features the works of both young designers who are currently active in the field and masters who led the dawn of graphic design. Included in the exhibition are the iconic posters created by Yūsaku Kamekura (1915-1997) for the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games, a historical event in Japan that shaped the nation’s post-war identity. Katsumi Asaba’s unconventional posters for the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships, which incorporate traditional Japanese paintings, are also featured.

Through this exhibition, viewers will be able to appreciate the compositional beauty, dynamism and humour expressed in each poster, all of which offer a unique perspective of sports.
