Starter Course (A1)

Thank you very much for your interest in our Starter Course. Enrolments have now sold out.

Please note: The Japan Foundation, Sydney’s membership (as a requirement of J-Course) registration can be begun after you have enrolled in the Starter Course.

This is a one year course consisting of 4 terms of 10 weeks.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Ask and answer basic questions on familiar topics, such as family and oneself.
  • Understand and use simple phrases and sentences in areas of essential need.
  • Recognise familiar names, words and very basic phrases on simple notices.
  • Write basic, isolated phrases and sentences.

Course Content

In the Starter course, we aim to cover Topics 1 to 8 of the textbook “Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture (Starter, A1)”.

Aki (First) Term
Topics 1 and 2: “Japanese” and “Myself”
*Suitable for absolute beginners

Fuyu (Second) Term
Topics 3 and 4: “Food” and “Home”

Haru (Third) Term
Topics 5 and 6: “Life” and “Holidays and Days off 1”

Natsu (Fourth) Term
Topics 7 and 8: “Towns” and “Shopping”

Course fee

$350/term + $20 administration fee*

* Students enrolling in the first term of the Starter course, and other new and returning students requiring a placement test will be charged a $20 non-refundable administration fee in addition to the $350 course fee when enrolling. 

Please note that the course fee does not include textbooks.

Class is held once a week. Students are enrolled in either the Wednesday or Saturday class.

: Min. 7 / Max. 12 (classroom 1) or 14 (seminar room)

Online classes will be held via Zoom video conferencing. You can join a test meeting at https://zoom.us/test.

For the best experience with online classes and homework, we recommend using the following:
  • a computer or laptop (operating systems: Windows 10 or 8.1 / Mac OS X 10.10 or later),
  • the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari,
  • headphones with a microphone,
  • a web camera, and
  • a stable internet connection, with at least a 1.2Mbps download speed and 600kbps upload speed. You can test your internet speed here.

Textbooks used in this course

Fee

Starter [A1] $30 (Two volumes)

Textbook fees will be charged at the same time as the course fees in terms requiring a new textbook.

Students can choose to receive their textbooks and supplementary materials via post or pick them up from The Japan Foundation, Sydney office.
