Update: #ASAA2020 Conference [Cancelled]

BACKGROUND

On March 20, the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) announced its decision to cancel the ASAA 2020 Conference which was to have been held at The University of Melbourne, July 6-9.

The Japan Foundation, Sydney had been in the process of working with both the ASAA and the Japanese Studies Association of Australia (JSAA) to support an increased Japan-related presence at ASAA 2020, so it was with regret that we received this news.

Nonetheless, we wanted to take this opportunity to share how we had planned to participate in the conference, with the aim of inviting feedback and suggestions that might shape our future participation in other major local conferences.

OUR (ERSTWHILE) PLANS FOR #ASAA2020

Following a consultation process that began in August 2019 (consisting of a survey of Japan-related researchers as well as direct consultation with the ASAA conference committee and JSAA), our plans for #ASAA2020 were as follows:

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

While these initiatives will no longer be taking place, The Japan Foundation, Sydney wishes to thank the many individuals and organisations who contributed to this project through their willingness to discuss and collaborate. They include:

  • Kate McGregor and Jemma Purdey of the ASAA 2020 Conference Committee
  • JSAA President Beatrice Trefalt and the (proposed) student mobility roundtable panellists
  • the respondents who took the time to share their ideas via our survey

SUGGESTIONS & FEEDBACK

With a view to improving our engagement with future conferences, we welcome suggestions and feedback regarding the above initiatives. Please address any queries or comments to the Japanese Studies department via the contact details on this page. Thank you.
