Eiga Nights x HORROR MANGA JAPAN

Free Film Screenings

December 5, 2019 & Jan 16, 2020

Hot nights are perfect for spine-chilling thrills. That’s why this summer, Eiga Nights focuses on the horror genre in collaboration with the HORROR MANGA JAPAN program. This chapter of Eiga Nights bring together two films from wildly opposite ends of the Japanese horror spectrum: turn-of-the-century classic horror writing vs. fantasy horror manga.

Different thrills, same chills…

Rampo Noir (乱歩地獄)

Dir. Suguru Takeuchi + Akio Jissoji + Hisayasu Sato + Atsushi Kaneko / 2005 / 134 mins / Cast: Tadanobu Asano, Mikako Ichikawa, Kaiji Moriyama, Ryuhei Matsuda / Music: Ryoji Ikeda, Jules Massanet, Yoshihide Otomo, Saiko-Ai, Yura Yura Teikoku / Japanese with English subtitles / MA15+, strong horror violence, themes and sex scenes
December 5 (Thursday), 6:30pm – 8:45pm

Four classic horror tales, revamped. Dreamily grotesque…

Four directors bring to life four different stories by iconic Japanese horror writer, Edogawa Rampo (1894 – 1965). Rampo’s name plays on the Japanese pronunciation of Edgar Allen Poe, whose gothic tales were an inspiration for Rampo’s forays into horror and the murky depths of the human psyche. Boasting a stellar cast and soundtrack, Rampo Noir is a seductively stylised showcase of classic horror tales whose twisted narratives translate disturbingly well to the big screen.

TOKYO GHOUL (LIVE ACTION)

Dir Kentaro Hagiwara / 2017 / 120 mins / Cast: Masataka Kubota, Fumika Shimizu, Yu Aoi, Nobuyuki Suzuki / Japanese with English subtitles / MA15+, strong supernatural themes and violence
January 16 (Thursday), 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Fantasy, action, fx and gore… what more could you want from this manga adaptation?

Present-day Tokyoites live in terror of supernatural beings called ghouls, who survive by eating human flesh. When ordinary college student Ken Kaneki is attacked by a ghoul, he survives—but becomes part ghoul himself, and has to learn to protect himself as he struggles to come to terms with his new identity. Fantasy horror with lashings of action, perfect for anyone who likes their eyeballs medium-rare and served up on a plate. Adapted from the manga series of the same name by Sui Ishida.
