Learn the ins and outs of cosplay from superstars of the Australian cosplay community

Have you ever wanted to learn more about cosplay or the cosplay community in Australia? Perhaps you’re sad about the cancellation of upcoming conventions and are itching to get your pop culture and cosplay kick this year? Satiate your craving with this online series featuring three of Australia’s top cosplay experts!

The series will kick off with an introduction to the Australian cosplay scene with Dr Emerald L King (La Trobe University), who is both an avid cosplayer and a researcher of Japanese literature and pop culture. Following this, see for yourself the time and effort it takes to cosplay both male and female characters with cosplayer Cinohrui as she transforms into Ashitaka and San from the world-famous Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke. Finally, learn how to cosplay Lio Fortia from the hit Studio Trigger film Promare in a live Facebook workshop with Miyukiko, where she will give a makeup style demo and an overview on how to approach cosplaying the character. Not only will you learn the application of character makeup in this step-by-step tutorial, but you’ll also learn other cosplay tips, pointers on adding creative touches and ways you can use makeup to give a more natural yet ethereal feel.

Get Into Character! Lio Fortia from Promare
Join Miyukiko live as she shares how she gets into character, featuring her Lio Fortia (Promare) cosplay. In this workshop, you’ll learn creative tips and pointers to perfect your cosplay transformations.

If you would like to follow along with Miyukiko, prepare the following materials:

Liquid foundation base
Powder foundation
Concealer for eyebrows or areas such as eye circles
Eyeshadow palette with browns and reds
Eyeshadow shimmer palette with white and warmer tones such as pink/orange/brown
2 pencil eyeliners in brown and light pink or white
Liquid or pen eyeliner in black
False eyelashes (top and bottom) and eyelash glue

Artists

Emerald L King

Dr Emerald L King started cosplaying in 2007, where she was invited to conduct a talk on magical girls at her local anime convention. Since then, she has created over 40 costumes from anime, manga and Japanese games. Based at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where she teaches and writes about Japanese language, literature and pop culture, King has cosplayed, judged, and MC’d at domestic and international events.

King is also an award-winning cosplayer, placing in the finals of the Madman National Cosplay Championship 2012, 2016 and 2018 and coming first runner up in the Australian heats, World Cosplay Summit 2019. Emerald also regularly volunteers at the World Cosplay Finals in Nagoya as a translator and interpreter.

Cinohrui

Cinohrui (aka Cinoh) is a Sydney-based cosplayer who has won awards at Supanova (2019 Sydney Best Group – Hannah Alexander Art Mercy), Madman Anime Festival (2019 Sydney Best Cosplay Group Award – Kubo), and SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show (2018 Best of Show – Zhuque Mercy; 2018 Special Judges Choice Award – Zhuque Mercy) for her extravagant hand-made costumes. She loves cosplaying a diverse range of characters from video games, movies and anime including Mercy (Overwatch), Princess Mononoke (Princess Mononoke) and Kubo (Kubo and the Two Strings).

Miyukiko

Miyukiko is a Sydney-based artist who has been cosplaying since 2005. Having completed a Bachelor of Digital Media from the University of New South Wales, as well as postgraduate studies at Enmore Design Centre, Miyukiko is actively working within the anime, manga and video game industry as a freelance illustrator and illustration teacher. She has been featured as a panelist at Madman Anime Festival anime and manga convention numerous times, as well as conducted illustration workshops for institutions such as Campbelltown Art Centre and Class Bento.

Her recent works include illustrations for PipeDream, AzurLane and Floraiku luxury perfume. She is also a colourist for Cape of Spirits. During her career, she has seen multiple changes to the anime and cosplay industry, including the rise and fall of many trends. Miyukiko hopes to use her line of work to generate more interest in and give light to the creative fields within Australia.
