Online PD for Japanese Language Teachers (Nov 2021)

With the semester coming to an end, no doubt some of you are about to start preparing for next year’s classes. Those looking for inspiration are invited to join our online professional development sessions. The Japan Foundation, Sydney will hold online PD sessions for Japanese teachers on November 20th and 27th. We are offering two different PD sessions (Sessions A & B) on both days. The contents of Session A and B will be the same on both days. We look forward to your participation. 

【Session A】
Australian Curriculum (AC) based classroom activities for Y5-Y8 students: カレー (Japanese curry) 

【Session B】
Creating Japanese resources with PowerPoint

Target participants:
Japanese language teachers at Primary and Secondary levels in Australia and New Zealand

Participation fee:
Free, Registrations essential

Feedback form:
Participants who completed feedback form by December 10, 2021 (Friday) will be access to the session PPT (PDF format).

VOD :
Those sessions will not be recorded therefore no VOD will be available.

【Session A】

Australian Curriculum (AC) based classroom activities for Y5-Y8 students: カレー (Japanese curry) 

Date:
November 20, 2021 (Saturday) 1pm-2pm AEDT (60min)
November 27, 2021 (Saturday) 1pm-2pm AEDT (60min)

Presenter:
Shunsuke Hirakawa, Language Consultant

Description:
This session will focus on promoting and developing intercultural understanding for students through Japanese food culture on the theme of カレー (Japanese curry). Participants will be introduced to the history and various kinds of Japanese curry, and will explore the concepts behind it.  Participants will then look at some sample tasks and activities and discuss how concepts and language elements fit together based on the AC: Japanese. This session is suitable for Upper Primary and Junior Secondary teachers.
Note: This session might be presented in other state’s PD sessions.

Simple Japanese 

Attendance certificate:
It will be given to the participants who met the following requirement.
1) Attending the session for at least 50 min of the 60 min session.

 

【Session B】

Creating Japanese resources with PowerPoint

Date:
November 20, 2021 (Saturday) 3pm-4pm AEDT (60min)
November 27, 2021 (Saturday) 3pm-4pm AEDT (60min)

Presenter:
Himiko Negishi-Wood, Language Consultant

Description:
This session is a repeat of the same session that ran in 2020 and 2021, back due to popular demand!
In this session, we will explore how to use PowerPoint effectively in your Japanese class to create a range of interesting, engaging and interactive teaching materials. Participants will first gain experience using PowerPoint animations to make simple and fun quizzes. We will then run through some additional functions including how to insert images and sounds, as well as other animation techniques such as the page turn effect to create picture books. While the Japanese resources introduced in this session are aimed at Primary level, the functions we will cover can be applied at any level.
Note: This session will be conducted in a workshop style.

Requirements
1) Access to Microsoft PowerPoint software (Office 2010 or newer for Windows, Office
    2012 or newer for Mac), as we will cover using PowePoint’s trigger function.
2) Please ensure to use a desktop or laptop for the workshop (tablets, Chromebooks and
     mobile phones do not meet our requirements).

Session language:
Simple Japanese and English

Attendance certificate:
It will be given to the participants who met the following 2 requirements.
1) Attending the session for at least 50 min of the 60 min session.
2) Submitting a task (to be created though the session) by December 10, 2021 (Friday).
