This is one in a series of practical seminars based on the JF Standard for Japanese Education-based Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture series. As the first session of 2024, this seminar will be mainly focusing on the Starter (A1) and Elementary (A2) levels, which consists of the two ‘Activities’ and ‘Competences’ textbooks.

The Marugoto series are textbooks based off practical Can-do goals aiming to improve the students’ Japanese communication skills, with an emphasis on audio input. When we teach with Marugoto, no matter whether it’s our first time or if we’ve since gained experience, we often have to deal with various questions and concerns of our own – which other teachers may have in common.

In this seminar, after introducing the Marugoto series, we will take the ‘Activities’ textbook from the Starter (A1) set, and experience class from a learner’s point of view through a mock lesson. This mock lesson will be covering the first listening comprehension tasks and conversation practice found in ‘Lesson 3: Nice to meet you’. Then, we will categorise and explain frequently asked questions from participants in previous seminars (held from 2020 to 2023) into topics such as “Classroom procedures”, “Assisting students” and “Supplementary materials”. During which, we will consider a class that enhances the students’ learning effectiveness while the teacher can teach with confidence. In addition, we will share the practices (course design and achievement tasks) we use in our Japanese language courses designed for adult learners at our centre.

We hope that this will prove helpful not only in your Marugoto classes, but in any can-do based course focused on Japanese communication.

*Please feel free to ask questions when applying for the seminar, as well as during the session itself.

*For those already using Marugoto, or who have participated in our seminars in the past, why don’t you take this opportunity to reflect on your everyday challenges? We also recommend this seminar for anyone interested in or considering using the Marugoto series.
