City Pop: Inspired Nostalgia

October 21 – December 19, 2020

Coinciding with the Hiroshi Nagai: Paintings for Music exhibition, The Japan Foundation, Sydney presents City Pop: Inspired Nostalgia, an event program themed around city pop music and Japanese popular culture from the 1980s to now.

Running from October to December, City Pop: Inspired Nostalgia features a selection of free film screenings and music events. Discover the music genre that encapsulated a new mode of living in 1980s Japan – music that invigorated young urbanites dreaming of an indulgent city lifestyle and balmy summers by the poolside. Immerse yourself in nostalgia for 1980s Japan with monthly film screenings including a documentary on Haruomi Hosono, the grandfather of city pop, animated features with city pop-inspired soundtracks, a live DJ set from producer Night Tempo and an Online Catalogue launch and talk event with Professor Toshiyuki Owada, expert on American Music and Mark ‘Frosty’ McNeill, curator of the Pacific Breeze compilation albums.

From long-time city pop aficionados to blossoming fans, this event series has something for the music lover in everyone.
